11/1/11 - NYCHSAA Championship -
VCP - Only 3 days after a one-of-a-kind snowstorm postponed the Sectional Champs, a one-of-a-kind performance was turned in by Mike Dugan and his Freshman teammates, who won the NYCHSAA Archdiocesan championship over favorite Xavier HS, behind the inspiring race from Dugan.  Mike won the 1.5 mile race in a time of 8 minutes 16.5 seconds, breaking the 43 year-old school record set by Hall of Famer Brian Faraci '72, who also set the record winning the Sectional champs back in 1968.   Mike's time is only 4 seconds off the Archiocesan record and only 6 seconds from the NY State Catholic school record.   3rd place in the meet went to another budding star as Joe Prunty '15 logged a time of 8:42 for 7th best in Prep history, and Kyle Guzman's 8:58 clocking is good for 11th best ever.  With help from sold races by Paul McGovern, Arthur Condor, Eamon and Pat Coughlin, the Rams put 7 kids in the top 20 to seal the meet.  The Frosh B team also edged Xavier behind Mike Miano, Stephen Clow, Jamie Brown, Greg Apostle and Dave Vitiello.
Not to be outshone, Jonathan Calvello took his place in the Prep annals as he became only the 7th sophomore to break the 14 minute barrier over the 2.5 mile course.  Jon led the Varsity to 5th place at the Sectionals.

Born to Run!
Sat 9/24 -
Warwick Wave Mania XC Run - Warwick, NY
The Prep's first-ever trip to Warwick's Cross Country festival was a muddy success.  The Freshmen, led by 4th place finisher Mike Dugan, took 4th in both Frosh races.  The Varsity placed 12th led by Sophomore Jon Calvello, and the JV took 5th and 7th highlighted by fine races from Seniors Charlie Welsh and Jaime Guzman.

Soph Matt Kukowski (pictured, left) lost his shoes in the muck at Warwick in just the first 400  meters.  No matter, as he ran the race barefoot, and had a great race.
Check out Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, a book that tells the story of the Tarahumara people of western Mexico, for whom running--running great distances barefoot--is a way of life for young and old.  The author follows recent research that suggests barefoot running is best for all runners based on the idea that humans evolved to stand upright in order to run great distances to catch prey.  That is, that as a species, we were all "born to run":

Mon 9/18 - 19th Annual Jim Scott Challenge - FP
On the same day that Mariano Rivera set a record that may stand for decades, Freshman Mike Dugan set a record that may well still be standing when he's long graduated.  Mike shattered the meet record for the mile by 13 seconds, winning a thriller in 4:54.9 to pace the Frosh to 2nd place in the team score!  Greg Martin led the Varsity to a solid 10:45 average in the 2 mile run.  Lucas Keefer gets 2nd to lead the JV to first in the JV mile.

Sat 9/17 - Regis Invitational - VCP

Superb meet from the Frosh who get 2nd in both races at Regis Invite.  Mike Dugan 2nd in 8:39, moves up the all time list, and Jposeph Prunty makes his debut on the stories list with a 9:28!
Varsity/JV have productive day with 9 to 13 mile runs at Tibbetts Brook Park!

Jonathan Calvello '14 is the first Varsity finisher in a promising debut over the 2.5m course!  The Varsity get 3rd out of 9 teams!
